Gifted & IQ Testing for Children and Teens in Tampa Bay

Helping you understand your child’s unique abilities, strengths, and potential.

Every child learns differently. Some children seem to absorb information effortlessly, ask endless questions, or think several steps ahead. Others may be bright and curious but struggle in school, become easily frustrated, or seem out of sync with their peers.

If you’ve wondered whether your child may be gifted, or you need an IQ assessment to better understand their learning abilities, TBAC Group is here to help.

We offer professional IQ and gifted testing for children and teens ages 6–16 using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-V). Our goal is to help families better understand their child’s cognitive strengths and areas of challenge, with results that can help guide educational planning and next steps.

Convenient testing locations in Tampa and St. Petersburg.

Could Your Child Benefit from Gifted or IQ Testing?

Parents seek IQ testing for many different reasons. You may recognize your child in some of the descriptions below.

  • They seem advanced for their age. Your child learns quickly, uses an unusually advanced vocabulary, makes unexpected connections, or shows exceptional curiosity.
  • School feels too easy—or surprisingly difficult. Your child may be underchallenged, bored, frustrated, or struggling despite demonstrating strong abilities.
  • You want to explore gifted program eligibility. Your family or school has recommended cognitive testing as part of the educational planning process.
  • Your child has an uneven learning profile. They may excel in certain areas but struggle with attention, working memory, processing speed, or other aspects of learning.
  • You want a clearer understanding of how your child thinks. You want more information about their abilities and how to support their learning and development.
You don't need to know whether your child is gifted before seeking an assessment. Testing can help provide a clearer picture of their individual cognitive profile.

What Is IQ Testing?

IQ testing is a standardized assessment that measures aspects of a child’s intellectual and cognitive abilities. It can provide information about how a child reasons, solves problems, understands language, processes information, and holds information in mind.

At TBAC Group, we use the WISC-V, an individually administered assessment designed for children ages 6 years, 0 months through 16 years, 11 months.

The assessment provides an overall measure of intellectual functioning, along with information about different areas of cognitive ability. These results can help identify patterns of strengths and weaknesses that may be relevant to learning and educational planning.

IQ testing is not a measure of everything that makes your child who they are. Creativity, emotional intelligence, motivation, interests, and many other qualities also contribute to a child’s abilities and potential.

How Does the Testing Process Work?

Step 1: Schedule an Appointment

Contact our team to discuss your child’s age, your reasons for seeking testing, and any specific requirements from your child’s school or school district.

We’ll help you understand the next steps and determine whether the WISC-V is appropriate for your child’s needs.

Step 2: Complete the Assessment

Your child will meet individually with the qualified professional administering the assessment in a supportive, structured setting.

The WISC-V includes a series of age-appropriate activities and questions designed to assess different cognitive abilities. Depending on the tasks, your child may answer questions, solve puzzles, work with visual information, or complete activities involving memory and reasoning.

The assessment is not a school exam, and your child does not need to study or prepare academically beforehand.

Testing time varies depending on the child’s needs and the assessment procedures. We’ll explain the expected appointment length when you schedule.

Step 3: Scoring and Interpretation

After testing, the results are scored and interpreted to develop a clearer picture of your child’s cognitive abilities.

Rather than focusing on a single number alone, results can help identify areas where your child demonstrates relative strengths and areas where they may benefit from additional support or a different approach to learning.

Step 4: Review the Results and Discuss Next Steps

You’ll receive information about your child’s assessment results and what they may mean for your family.

Depending on your child’s needs and the reason for testing, results may help inform discussions about educational planning, gifted services, learning support, or whether further evaluation may be beneficial.

If you’re pursuing testing for school gifted-program eligibility, please share the specific requirements with us before scheduling. School districts may have their own procedures and eligibility criteria, and testing results do not automatically guarantee placement in a gifted program.

What Does the WISC-V Measure?

The WISC-V evaluates several areas of cognitive functioning. Together, these scores help provide a more complete picture of how your child processes and uses information.

Verbal Comprehension

How a child understands language, explains ideas, and reasons using words.
Verbal Comprehension

Visual-Spatial Abilities

How a child understands visual details, recognizes spatial relationships, and works with visual patterns.
Visual-Spatial Abilities

Fluid Reasoning

How a child identifies patterns, solves unfamiliar problems, and uses logical reasoning.
Fluid Reasoning

Working Memory

How a child holds and works with information in mind while completing a task.
Working Memory

Processing Speed

How efficiently a child completes certain simple visual tasks under timed conditions.

The WISC-V also provides a Full Scale IQ score, which summarizes performance across selected cognitive areas. Individual index scores add important context because children can demonstrate different levels of ability across these areas.

Is IQ Testing the Same as Gifted Testing?

IQ testing can be an important part of identifying giftedness, but the terms are not always interchangeable.

An IQ assessment provides standardized information about a child’s cognitive abilities. Gifted-program eligibility, however, depends on the requirements of the school district and the individual circumstances of the student.

If your child is being evaluated for a Florida public school gifted program, we encourage you to obtain the current requirements from your child’s school district before scheduling. This helps ensure you understand what documentation and assessment information may be needed.

Our team can discuss your testing goals with you before your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

We use the WISC-V for children ages 6 years, 0 months through 16 years, 11 months. If your child is outside this age range, contact our team to discuss whether another option may be appropriate.

The time needed varies by child and assessment procedures. We will explain the expected appointment length when scheduling. Additional time may be needed for discussion, scoring, interpretation, or report preparation. Does my child need to prepare for the test? No special academic preparation is needed. We recommend that your child get a good night's sleep, eat beforehand, and arrive as comfortably prepared as possible. Let us know if there are concerns that could affect participation.

Ask our team about the written documentation and feedback included with your assessment appointment. If the assessment is being requested by a school, confirm the required report format and documentation before scheduling.

Possibly, depending on the requirements of your child's school district and the purpose of the assessment. Please tell us about any school-specific requirements before booking. A WISC-V assessment alone does not guarantee eligibility or placement.

A high score can provide important information about cognitive ability, but gifted identification depends on the criteria used by the relevant school or program. A child's broader learning profile and educational needs may also be important.

Children can have advanced cognitive abilities alongside attention, learning, or other challenges. Let our team know about any relevant diagnoses, accommodations, or concerns so we can discuss whether this assessment is appropriate and how results should be interpreted.
